It is completely normal to feel some tenderness and discomfort when you first have your braces fitted.
If you have just had your braces fitted or adjusted, you will know that your mouth can feel a little sensitive after your appointment. This is a completely normal side effect, and should resolve as you get used to the feeling of your braces. In fact, you should find your braces more and more comfortable with time as you adjust to the treatment. If you experience some discomfort, it is a good idea to stick to soft foods that are easy to eat and which don’t require much chewing. Soft foods will help to minimise any pain that you feel, and will also help to prevent your brackets from breaking. Here are some of the best things to eat when you first get braces…
1. Natural yoghurt
Yoghurt is a great option to eat when you have just had your braces fitted or adjusted because it does not require any chewing. Its smooth and creamy texture is extremely easy to eat, plus it’s packed with calcium and protein which are good for your teeth and bones. Ideally, you should choose a yoghurt that does not contain sugar — go for a natural option and mix it into a fruit smoothie or simply enjoy on its own.
2. Popsicles
Homemade popsicles are an excellent choice if you are looking for something to soothe or numb your mouth. To make your own, simply puree fresh fruit and place it into moulds before putting them in the freezer for a few hours. Choose which ever fruits you like — some good options include watermelon, banana, and peach either on their own or mixed with some natural yoghurt.
3. Mashed vegetables
Eating cooked, mashed vegetables is an effective way of getting the nutrients and energy that you need with minimal effort. Mashed potatoes are a good option, and can be mixed with butter or sour cream for some extra flavour. Other vegetables that work well in their mashed form include carrots, parsnips, pumpkin and cauliflower. These can all be steamed, boiled or roasted before mashing, depending on your preference.
4. Soups and smoothies
Blended soups and broths are easy to eat and can be made at home with whatever meat and vegetables you like. It’s possible to make a big batch of soup or broth and freeze it in individual portions for a quick and easy meal.
Smoothies are also a great way to get all the nutrients that you need and can be custom-made to suit your particular taste. Simply combine yoghurt or milk with your favourite fruits for a tasty, easy-to-consume snack. You can even throw in some leafy greens or other vegetables for an extra nutritious treat.
