Three questions to ask before you have orthodontic treatment

It is important that you are properly informed before you begin orthodontic treatment.

If you are considering orthodontic treatment, you may be excited at the prospect of achieving a straighter, healthier, and more beautiful smile. Thanks to advances in modern orthodontics, most bite and alignment-related issues can be effectively resolved, and there are several options available to patients of all ages. But before you begin the process, there are a few things to consider. Here’s what you should ask your orthodontist before you undergo treatment…

1. Is orthodontic treatment really necessary?

Although orthodontic treatment can achieve some amazing things and really transform the appearance and function of one’s smile, it is worth asking whether it is actually necessary for you. It is important to understand that it takes time and effort to undergo orthodontic treatment, which is why you should know for sure that you are a suitable candidate for your procedure of choice.

When you consult with your orthodontist, it is advisable that you discuss any concerns that you have with them, along with your aesthetic goals. Your orthodontist will thoroughly examine your teeth and jaw and check for issues that need to be resolved.

If they identify problems like crooked or overcrowded teeth, or bite-related problems, it is likely that you will benefit from orthodontic treatment. In fact, by undergoing orthodontic treatment, it is often possible to improve one’s overall oral health and hygiene.

2. What treatment is best?

Once your orthodontist has confirmed that you will benefit from orthodontic treatment, it is time to ask about the solution that is most appropriate for you. The treatment that is most suitable for you will depend on a few factors, including the particular concerns you have, your cosmetic goals, the severity of your orthodontic issues, your budget, and your lifestyle. Your orthodontist will explain all your treatment options to you and guide you towards a decision that will work for you.

In many cases, traditional braces remain the most effective option, but there are many other treatments available, including clear aligners, lingual braces, and ceramic braces, which may be worth considering. Your orthodontist will let you know which of these treatments will work for your particular case.

3. What can I expect from my treatment?

When you and your orthodontist have chosen a treatment, it’s likely that you will have some questions about what you can expect from the process. Don’t be afraid to raise these questions with your orthodontist as they will be able to explain the treatment in detail and let you know how long the process will take, if you can expect any discomfort, and if there are any dietary or lifestyle changes that you should make.

If you are having braces fitted, for example, you will need to avoid certain foods for the duration of your treatment to prevent damage to your braces and maintain your oral health. On the other hand, if you choose to wear clear aligners, there are certain things you should know about keeping them clean and free from stains.
